Dear VT friends,

I've got a question. Just I would like to know the distance between Hamburg and Hannover cities (Hannover university) and if we live in Hamburg is it a problem commuting to Hannover everyday?

Any comments would be appreciated.

The distance between the two cities is a bit over 150 klms. That's quite a way to commute! While trains between the two are frequent (every half hour or so during peak) it does take just under one and half hours - so depending on when your lecture times are, it is doable - although nearly 3 hours a day on a train is not my idea of good living. The other thing to consider is the cost. The second class ticket is about 35-39 euros one way but I imagine you will be able to get discounted fares.

There must be a reason you want to live in Hamburg while attending the University in Hannover, if not, I would live in the city where the College is OR at least within close proximity. Just as an aside, the Luneburger Heide is a nice forest area that is worth a visit and not far away from Hannover. Nice villages there as well.

I can confirm the info in the previous posting. I know people who are doing it but their ways of life include limited family life and a yearly 100 % pass for Deutsche Bahn costing several thousands EUR and which they use as substitute for owning a car. Keep in mind that Hamburg isn't exactly small either so it might take quite a long time to get to the station in the first place. Hannover is not the Cosmopolitan place that Hamburg is, but it is a very decent city with a high quality of life.

PS: There is also a university in Lüneburg. This is not that far away from your TU Hamburg-Harburg
