Culiacán Travel Forum

My daughter is planning to be in Culiacan for a week as part of a church mission at the orphanage. U.S. papers are talking about drug wars etc. Is it safe to be in Cuilcan?

I assume your church is sponsoring her trip? Culiacan is the center of the narco mundo, however New York City and New Jersey are the mafia centers of the USA and most visitors do not meet mafiosi... even when they go to Little Italy or Cherry Hill. She should stick to tourist and church itinerary, NOT party, even if local kids are smoking dope it is highly illegal for foreigners. NOT drink or get drunk or act like anything other than a respectful tourist and helper. Be aware that Christian evangalism is prevalent here yet this is a traditional Catholic country without a huge barrier between church and state. My mexican friends do not love the obviously foreign evangelical Christians who prowl in packs here, they express it by making fun of them rather than anything more drastic. She must know it is a foreign country and anything construed as political action or illegal is grounds for arrest and expulsion. However all that said, its probably gonna be just fine, Mexico is alot friendlier in general than USA or Europe.
