Traffic around the roads around O'Hare is intense.
Why don't you fly to Green Bay? O'Hare Airport to Green Bay is 3.5 hours by road without stopping.

If you decide to drive I think you"ll find that the directions given by car rental companies are usually good, and those at O'Hare would be likely to have current information about road construction and other delays. There's a lot road work going on now on the Illinois roads you"d take, and people in Wisconsin have a saying, "Wisconsin has 2 seasons--winter and "road construction." Some of the roads will charge toll so you'd need to have some money (the car rental place can tell you about how much, in small denominations--one dollar bills and quarters would be the most useful.
You probably won't have much trouble adjusting to left hand drive. The roads are multi land and have easily red road signs. You can get good directions on line form lots of web sites, such as Google Maps. http://maps.google.com/

Alot of rental companies now are part of the electronic charging system for tolls. You should ask. All you do is drive through the camera lanes and you get a small charge on your card 2 weeks later.
In florida, I took this option and used the toll highway twice that day and paid $2.50 more than the 4 tolls I would have needed to pay.

The driving around Chicago is crazy, but if you are from a big city, and you are use to driving in heavy traffic, with many lanes, and people who swerve in and out of lanes with little or no notice, then you should be ok. A good map should get you there, and a lot of car rentals now have GPS in them, so that you can put in your destination, and the GPS will talk to you and give you directions, taking you right to the door of your hotel/motel.

i think i will make sure i have GPS , will avoide the reading the map upside down !!!
i went into map google and it only has 4 roads and by the map it looks like a stright line and as long as you have water on your left hand side you should be ok -

Actually the water (Lake Michigan) will be on your right side as you drive north to Green Bay. As others have said there is a lot of road construction this time of year, but since the road to Milwaukee is well traveled they make sure the traffic flows at a good pace. Some specifics as you leave O'Hare Airport. After you receive your rental car you will be actually going south for about 1/2 mile or less and getting onto I-190 going toward the city of Chicago. There are a lot of exits and entrances to several highways in a short distance so be very aware of signs at this early juncture of your trip. You will want to look for I-294 going north toward Milwaukee. Once you are on I-294 you have almost won the road battle. You will take I-294 to the Milwaukee area and then watch for the signs which say I-43 North (I don't know if they say Green Bay or not, but just remember to keep heading north). The times that you will run into the most traffic going north is between 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you are coming in during those times you may want to get something to eat in the area before venturing on your trip to Green Bay. As long as you are going to be in Green Bay for 2 weeks be sure to go to Door County which is north of Green Bay. I am sure you would enjoy it up there.
