Using public transport, can I get to Hull and back in the one day?
I have checked some timetables but it doesn't look too promising.

You certainly can. There are no direct trains but as this link shows it can be done. Approx 3 hours each way : http://www.thetrainline.com/Time_Table/QTT_Display_Timetable.asp

A day visit is onlt possible by train (or hir car).

There are trains with either one or two changes, taking from 2h 12 to 3h 27. Last train back is at 20:56.

Return fares are 35 (limited trains) or 39GBP (all trains).
