| Melbourne | Changing Money - where is the best?? Posted: Sun May 25, 2008 01:54 AM UTC
We're going to Melbourne next week and wondering if anyone knows a good place for changing money.
I've heard that the rates of foreign exchange booths in the city centre are not so good. So, probably airport is the safe option? or should we change before we go(in New Zealand)? Any advise would be appreciated, thanks for your help in advance!! |

Do what I do and simply use the ATM to take out cash from your local bank as the rates are more competitive compared to using the money exchange. There are plenty of money exchange booths on Swanston St in the city but do not change money at the 1st one you see. Go scout around and ask for the rates and then if you are planning to change a larger amount -- tell them and they would usually beat the quoted rate.

Would recommend you grab some aussie dollars before you leave so that you have some cash readilly available when you arrive.
We went to NZ last year and took about $500NZD with us and then just used ATM cards whilst in NZ. My personal opinion is that cash exchange rates are a rip off no matter what. Col

Agree with the above posters on ATM's and also getting Oz money in NZ would be the easiest. That being said, if you do have NZ $ with you when you arrive - unless its squillions - the time you spend hunting for the different rates it just not worth the effort when there is maybe $A500 involved.
Use the waiting time in NZ airport to change money, or use one of the bureau de changes at Melb airport. Enjoy Melb - and pack the rain coats

You can get Aussie dollars at the ATM machines at the international NZ airports.
