Papua Province Info about this adventure

I am really setting my goals to visit Irian Jaya (landing in Jayapura and exploring scenery round Wamena) but I would appreciate your help.

First I wonder does anybody has a contact of good guide? I would love to do 4-5 day trek into the mysterious area of Papua province. Antimalaric pills are strongly recommended but there I wonder again which one are the strongest and best (I would really like to avoid health problems during my stay there).

If you have any addition information about this area please let me know. I am planning of going there round 15th on June this year for few weeks. Truly hope to experience something new, friendly and most adventure. Beside trekking round Wamena I will do scubadiving round Manado and then return home.

Thanks for any help. Enjoy, Glorija

Hello Glorija,
Did you find out any useful information? I am also hoping to travel alone in this area, but I am going mid-July. Please let me know if you found out anything. Are you concerned about being a woman alone on a trek like this?

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Glorija and Jenny,

Great that you are gouing to the Baliem valley. I was there in 1979 (I think), too long ago to give any advice: much will have changed. I am looking at a diapositive showing Wamena airfield as just a grass strip.

On antimalaria pills, the last time my wife and I needed some (3 years ago), we used Malarone (brandname), which contains 100 mg proguanil and 250 mg atovaquon per tablet.
You have to take one tablet daily at your evening meal, starting one day before you go to the malaria area, and stopping only 7 days after you have left it. Preferably not longer that 4 weeks, which leaves you with 3 weeks at most in the malaria area. We experienced no side effects.
I still would advise to bring some mosquito repellent, if only for the nuisance.

Another point: bring some warm clothes. It can be very cold at night because you are so high up. I was not quite prepared for that in 1979 coming from Java and caught a bad cold.

Enjoy your trip,
Theo

Hello!

Its only one airline that flies from Jayapura to Wamena and that is Trigana Air - it will cost you about 1 000 000 rp round trip.
