What is the best way to get to Petra from Cairo? Would it be by plane and if so to what airport etc? Thanks!

The cheapest way is take a bus from Cairo to Taba, Egypt.
Then go overland to Elat, Israel. Then overland to Aqabah, Jordan. It is easy to get to Petra from Aqabah. The following web sites talks about traveling between Egypt and Jordan. Last month I traveled by overland from Israel to Dahab, Sinai. Then on to Cairo.

I like the idea of taking a bus and seeing the landscape...roughly how long did the entire journey take?

My trip was a little different.
I took a morning bus from Jerusalem to Elat. I think it was about 4 hours. Then a cab to the Taba border. Maybe 10 minutes Then a cab to Dahab. Maybe 1.5 hours. I was in Dahab early afternoon. Spend several days in Dahab. Then took overnight bus to Cairo. I think it was 10 hours. But the bus was only 2/3 full and it was conformable. There is a bus from Cairo to Taba. I think it is shorter but I don't know the details.

Oh, if you go Israel, you will not be allowed in some Arab countries, like Syria. But Egypt and Jordon are ok.
About to go away for the weekend so I will not be able to reply untill maybe Monday.
