Johannesburg 8-hour layover in Johannesburg
Posted: Fri May 23, 2008 01:23 AM UTC
I have an 8-hour layover in Johannesburg in late July...between 1530 and 2330, unfortunately. Any suggestions for something to do that would be more entertaining than 8 hours in an airport would be much appreciated!

Hi, not sure you have too many options. It will take you a couple of hours to get anywhere from the airport at that time of the afternoon. The highways around the airport are packed solid between 16:00 untill about 19:00 during weekdays. There are a couple of shopping malls close by the airport and a casino depending on what turns you on. The airport actual;ly has some good shops and restaurants so you might find it better to stay there and relax and catch up on emails etc. You could grab a taxi for a drive around but remember the first couple of hours you will not be moving much given the trafic jams.

Contact the airports company www.acsa.co.za and see if there are any organised tours that run from the airport. Otherwise, think of hiring a car and going for a drive to Sandton City +/- an hour each way.

Thanks - I anticipated that not arriving until mid-afternoon was going to be a problem, but that's the way the connections worked out. I spent 10 hours in the Hong Kong airport last time, so I'm sure I can entertain myself for 8 hours in this one.
