I'm looking into getting a private driver/translator with a 4 wheel to see these areas and possibly Luang Prabang, Laos.
Any pointers?

Hi,

You can book an English speaking guide and a car for those days in Hanoi. It's very easy to find. But should book in advance so that you will have good guide.

To Luang Prabang, you have to take flight. one daily flight from Hanoi. Or you can take flight to Vientiane if the schedule does not fix you. One night in VTE and then up to LPQ.

Let me know if you need further information,

Cheers,/KoolJ

The Mountain View Hotel in Sapa does private jeep tours. We took one way up to the Faulong Market on the Chinese border, and it was great. One driver and one guide, and both were very helpful, knowledgeable, and never once tried to pull the old "my cousin has a shop..." thing. We did the whole day at our own pace, stopped wherever we wanted to photograph things, and had a wonderful time with them.
