Hi,
the best hotels in Salzburg are Sacher, Goldener Hirsch and Bristol. My other hotel-favorites to be seen at my Salzburg-tips on VT! As to your teenagers: it might be nice, to take them to Hellbrunn-castle, where some surprises regarding hidden fountains etc are to be found. A walk up to Salzburg castle is also worthwile. Regarding evening programs the youngsters are certainly more up to date than the two of us, there are some very nice dicotheques in the city! Have a nice trip!

Salzberg was another place that I went on my trip with my grandmother.
Friday September 24, 1976 - ar. Salzburg 4:56 pm Hotel Oesterreichischer Hof We got off the train and called a taxi to the hotel and we unpacked, ate diner, bought tickets for the marionette theatre and went window shopping. After that we went to bed. Saturday September 25, 1976 The next day we went to the Grossglockner, up in the Alps. When we started there were millions of little farms with millions of horses and cows. We also saw men herding the cows down to the valley. We went and took pictures. I went on a cable car down to the glacier. There was a sign saying walk at your own risk. Then on the way back down the bus pulled over on the side and we got out and had a snowball fight. I put a snowball down the bus driver’s back. We came back down a different way and saw different scenery. We came back to the hotel and got showers and got dressed up. Then we went to the marionette theatre. It was so good you would think they were real if you didn’t see the strings. Sunday, September 26, 1976 That morning we went downstairs to breakfast. We went on the Sound of Music tour and saw where it was made. In the movie it looked like one house, but it was many places. Our guide was a Canadian and he looked like ..(can’t read) Then we took a City Tour to Hellbrun Castle and saw the trick fountains. Then we ate dinner and went to bed. (my grandmother's letter continued) Sunday night Taxi to our hotel which has twice been described to us on tours as the hotel that all the important people stay! I’m trying to get this written for BB to take to Berechtesgarten tomorrow to mail & use up our German stamps! We have been too busy to write – although she has written. We found the Salzburg Marionettes were actually here, so we bought tickets for “Die Fledermous” for Sat. night – then we found out the Grossglockerner tour was only Sat & Wed. so we did that – all day beautiful scenery, BB walked on the glacier – I didn’t go down for which I was very thankful after hearing her tell about it – the show was very good, I thot. Today we took the Sound of Music tour which was guided by a Canadian. It was really excellent – the movie was a conglomerate of a number of different places – BB & I want to see it again. This afternoon we went on a city tour including Hellbrunn Castle with all the fun showers of water that the guide turns on – we wore raincoats – it wasn’t very wet tho – tomorrow BB is going on the Salt Mine-Berchtesgarten tour by herself c a group – it’s just 2 slides – they no longer have the one in Hallein like they used to – I’m going to rest and shop – she’ll be back by noon. Then we’ll go to the fortress on the hill & shop around & re-organize our suitcases for travel tomorrow. Must check the train times since schedules changed over weekend – Love Mummy Monday, September 27, 1976 Today we got up and got dressed. Then we went downstairs for breakfast. I walked down to get a ticket to the salt mine. I went alone. Grandmummy stayed here and went shopping. I went to the salt mine. First we had to change into white pants that looked like bloomers, a black jacket, a black hat with a blue stripe and a leather belt with a leather seat. We got on a train and they took a picture. They are sending two pictures home to you. I am the 3rd person. We took that train to the slide and we slid down the slide. We saw a movie and got on a boat and went across a pond (inside the salt mine). We went down another slide and left the mines. I came back to the hotel and walk about 2 miles of hills to get to the fortress and went in. My sister and her family have also been to Salzberg but more recently - i.e. 2002. They also went to the marionette theatre June 3, 2002 We arrived in Salzburg at about 1100, no problem. Then we tried to find our hotel...It was in the old section on a pedestrian street. The way I thought would get us the closest looked like a car park with a yellow arm, that we couldn't get to go up. When we tried to go around (the city and the mountain that is in the middle) we found that the one way road we wanted was closed for some reason. So, we had to go all the way around, way outside the city. When we found it they gave us directions to get to the end of the street. By then it was nearly 1230 and my huaband was at the end of his driving rope. We checked in, parked the car in the festival car park (included in the room) and ate lunch. Our son bought a puppet from a street vendor (he is now building the stage out of old boxes). That night we ate at a place that had outside tables and a playground. June 4, 2002 We took the Sound of Music tour in the morning. In the afternoon my husband and son rested and I did a little shopping. We ate an early dinner at the hotel (fabulous) and went to the Marionette show (A Midsummer's Night Dream). Our son had heard the story before, and we could all follow the plot even though the words were in German. The puppets were amazing.

Hi,
Hotel "Österreichischer Hof" has been refurbished and renamed a few years ago. It's "Hotel Sacher" now ! Greetings!

I think you would struggle to fill 3,5 days in Salzburg city, two days should be more than enough if you want to cover the essential sights (Mirabellgarten, Mozart's birth house, Getreidegasse, cafes (Cafe Tomaselli), the castle, the churches etc.). The surroundings are beautiful though so you should take the opportunity to take a detour to a mountain or two.
I can recommend Hotel Blaue Gans in Getreidegasse (the main shopping street in Salzburg).

Hey again! Here are my plans so far of what to do each day. Tell me if I will have time to do all the activities I hope we can do each day.( but don’t want it too busy) Or if it is impractical to do certain activities on the same day (example: they are far away from each other, though I tried to not let that happen) Also any other activities we should do. So you can help us more: I am interested in outdoor stuff but still like pretty much anything else. (Sorry that didn’t explain anything) my brother likes things that are interactive. (Example: street fairs and hands on museums. not look at a painting place or look but don’t touch places) My dad loves history. And my mom likes anything to do with the Catholic Church (we have been to Italy) and she likes beaches. As always suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Day 37- Vienna/Salzburg – Hotel: Sheraton Salzburg Hotel Day 38- Salzburg – Hotel: Sheraton Salzburg Hotel • Berchtegarten Salt Mine • Mozart’s Birth House Day 39- Salzburg – Hotel: Sheraton Salzburg Hotel • Hellbrunn Castle • Marionette Show Day 40- Salzburg – Hotel: Sheraton Salzburg Hotel • Alps o Grossglockner Day 41- Salzburg/Prague – Hotel: Prague Marriott Hotel

As I wrote, you would struggle to fill 3,5 days in Salzburg city, not in Salzburg county or Salzburg city surroundings. The only city activity you have included in your plan is the Mozart birth house, the others are outside the city, like the salt mines, Hellbrunn castle, Großglockner. It sounds vice, you can always see the city of Salzburg in the morning, evening or for lunch and dinner time on your first day.
I am, however, not sure if seeing the Großglockner is doable in one day. You may be able to drive the so-called Hochalpenstraße (Higher Alps road) though. Apparently it is stunning.
