Mexico South Central Mexico for two weeks

Hi I will be arriving in Mexico city next week. I will have two weeks to explore around. Basically all I intend to do is seek out old colonial areas and take pictures. This is my first time to Mexico, I'm Canadian and not one to get paranoid or scared but I'm starting to get a little worried about travelling in MExico alone... There has been quite alot of violence towards Canadians in the last bit...
I'm looking for safe places to walk around with my DSLR and take pics...

My potential trip will probably go south from Mexico City to Taxco and then head down to Oaxaca city and then to the coast around there...
I'm used to the Thai style bungalows on the beach kinda deal so if anyone can recommend some places to visit I would be grateful... also any advise for a Mexican NEWBIE would be appreciated.

also the reason I chose to go to Mexico was because I saw some pics of Guanajuato... since then I've kinda changed my mind cause friends told me that if I want to take pictures they will all include gringos cause it's overtouristed.... is this true??? is it worth visiting or not visiting?

thanks in advance...
