| Lago di Como | Newbie to Lake Como Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 11:31 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
My girlfriend and i are going to Lake Como in late July - early August and that's all we've worked out so far! :) Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best town to base ourselves in? Ideally somewhere picturesque, not super touristy, and easy to get to other places from. Thanks in advance! |

Varenna!
You can reach it by direct train from Milano (about 1 hour). It is located near main touristy villages, so you can take ferry to see them (for example most famous Bellagio), but itself it is extremely nice an quiet. There are some beautiful gardens, nearby on the hill is a castle. Also there are ferries to Como city and other villages on the lake.

Definitely Varenna! You may end up spending most of the time there! Good place to be based, lots of places to explore. In late July, you'll welcome Varenna over Bellagio as it is less crowded (we got off the boat in Bellagio in the summer, and left on the following boat!).
Two ways to reach it. Favorite is taking the train from Milano Centrale towards Tirano - just get off in Varenna. Nice, too fast, picturesque ride thru the mountains. There's also a train that leaves Como and ends up in the (Milano) Cadorna station. This is not a pretty ride, but convenient if you're ending in Como. I have a tip to an awesome restaurant on my Como/Varenna page.

Again I have to say Varenna, easy access from Milan and to other towns on the lake from Varenna.
My Varenna page is at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/97f16/2268b/ Regards, Billy
