I stayed at the Gatwick Airport Central Premier Inn. It was 60 pounds pp for a night not including breakfast. You can get breakfast for an extra 8 pounds and the breakfast is quite good. There is a pub next door. The rooms were very clean. I booked the hotel through booking.com

I stayed at the Travel Inn, which is a five minute walk from the terminal. Have a look at my Gatwick page for the photos.

You can't get any nearer than the Yotel, which is actually within the Terminal itself. May be especially worthwhile if you aren't around very long, as you book the 'cabins' for set periods (from 4 hours)rather than only for 24 hours.

In the South Terminal, that is (there's a monorail between terminals).
