| Phuket | questions Posted: Mon May 19, 2008 04:18 PM UTC
Hi, im backpacking to phuket solo in early June and am looking for cheap accomodation. Im thinking of staying in Youth Hostel Phuket which is in Phuket town. I am on a tight budget, thinking of spending abt 6000 Baht for about 10 days. My questions are:
1)Is it too far away from the beaches as i plan to visit them and how is it to take the buses to go to the beaches? 2)Should i book the rooms online or go there and get rooms? 3)I was also thinking of visiting Phi Phi islands or Phang Nga but i don't knw if my budget allows it. If i am not intending to shop a lot, would it be enuff to go on the trip. 4) is it true that the tours to Phi Phi Island or Phang Nga can be booked when i'm there? thank u so much for helping me.. |

There are buses from Phuket Town to take you to the beaches, but as you do not say which beaches you want to visit it is hard to say how far away they are. As a guide Patong is about 30 minutes away by bus. As June is low season you should have no trouble getting rooms, but I would still book in advance so you know what spend you have committed to and you can normally cancel without any penalty if you find something better. Tours are easily booked when you are there.

Yes...as John said...It is wiser to book your Phi Phi tour in phuket...
Reason..??...Because you can get a better price than advertised... Prices do vary,so make your mind up whilst in Phuket... 6000 BHT is a tight budget for 10 days if you include accomodation and tour but not impossible....Sorry I cant help you with booking your youth hostel room online or walk-in...??...But,it does sound like the cheapest alternative accomodation...Tho' bussing to and from the west coast beaches everyday would be a hassle...Wish I could help you more...!!

It is the rainy season now and the waves can be quite rough along the Andaman coast at times. I don't think you'll need to book if you stay in Phang Nga town. Both Ko Phi Phi and Phang Nga are in low season now. A day trip can cost about 1000B. 600B a day really is a tight budget. But if you eat Thai food everyday, it is not a problem. You can budget about 150B a day for 3 meals in local restaurants.

I'll second much of what mim95 posted, especially with regards to weather conditions, just in case you get sea-sick easily.
You'll probably get cheaper accomodations in Phuket-town than Karon or Kata area but Phuket-town doesn't have beaches (it's inland though not far from some harbors/beaches. Other areas of interests are Krabi and Koh Lanta. Also, a 600baht daily budget is on the iffy side but as mim posted, if you eat Thai street-food or 'food court' meals, then 150 baht for 3 meals per day is 'do-able'.

I have lived in Kata now for three years. There is a hotel right on the beach for 500 baht per night. Any money you save staying in Phukettown will be spent on transportation back and forth and you will end up spending more. There is no need to pre book for June, you will only limit yourself. You can book a trip to Phi Phi when you get here. If you are really on a budget you are welcome to stay on my couch(free)
