We will be traveling on our own throughout Israel and would like to visit PEtra for two full days. Is it best to drive to Eilat and go from there? Are there drivers that can be hired in Eilat to take one all the way to Petra? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks.

Yes, the Aqaba border crossing is the best. You can take a bus or taxi from Eilat, walk across the border and get a taxi on the other side.
When will you be taking this trip? Perhaps you would like to join the WM08 meet? There is a Petra and Wadi Rum optional extention, 29 - 30 September. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/e7315/ http://meetings.virtualtourist.com/1/meeting-4241- There are also lots of organized tours from Eilat to Jordan, but I don't know if you can get a private driver for that. I just googled it. Worth checking out some of these, I guess, to see if they can arrange a private driver. http://www.google.co.il/search?q=Eilat+to+petra&am For more detailed info on Jordan and Petra, I can't do better than to recommend Ruth's site, Jordan Jubilee: http://www.jordanjubilee.com/

Hi,
I dont think that there is driver who can takes you to jordan from Israel, but all what you can do is to cross the border which only 10 minutes driving from Eilat, then after crossing you can hire a taxi to Petra which is 1.30 hour driving. There in petra ;lots of hotels, restaurants and banks. Two days pass to petra is 26JD per person. Enjoy it to the max

taxi, walk, taxi.
It's no worse than carrying your luggage up the stairs and into a train - in fact it's easier because there are no stairs ;-)
