Toronto Baseball question
Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 09:47 PM UTC
Hi,
I am coming to Toronto for a holiday mid June and would like to see the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball.
I've checked the fixtures and I'll be there for the Fathers day Fixture against the Chicago Cubs.
As this is the 3rd game out of a 3 game series, what happens if either team is 2 nil up going into it? Does the 3rd game go ahead?
Sorry that my knowledge here is pretty poor but as a limey I'm a few sandwiches short of a picnic!
Clank.

Yes! Every game is played regardless of the results of the prior games.

Make sure you've got sun block/hats if it's a sunny day, and make sure your seats don't face west into the setting sun during an evening game! (It most likely will be an afternoon game on a Sunday ... same difference tho'; I prefer non-West facing seats regardless.

In the case of a tie, the game will go into extra innings until one team comes out ahead - different to the 'kick-off' .. I think.

btw, when in TO you have root for the Jays!! ;)

Have fun!

Indeed, your question will get a few chuckles out of baseball fans,

It is not a best of 3. It is a 3-game series and the third game will take place regardless of the outcome in the previous 2. Should a team win all 3 games, then we're talking about a sweep of the series.
Have fun.

"but as a limey I'm a few sandwiches short of a picnic! "

With such poetic expression, you are well set to enjoy the esoteric experience of baseball! As the others noted, the term 'series' only denotes that 3 (or 4 or 5 or whatever) games will be played between 2 teams, and, yes, all games will be played (depending on the weather, of course).

The movie 'Field of Dreams' (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_Dreams) does address baseball as a mythic experience...so watch it, go, and have a great time!...even if my official spousal unit does threaten to bring her knitting to the game ;-) (baseball may be slow...but it's faster than cricket!!!)

The weather won't affect the game; in wet/cold weather the stadium roof is closed. However, should the roof be open and a sudden shower blow over it's possible to get damp - like we did one time ;) It takes a good few minutes to close up the dome.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies.
I will take the advice of buying a non west facing seat to keep out of the sun's glare, but what level seat infield/outfield would you recommend to see the best of the game?
If I go to this page http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/ticketing/singlegame.jsp?c_id=tor and then click on the ticket icon next to the Chicago game, the seating plan appears.
Have to say I cant wait to watch your team play as have looked at previous game highlights online and the atmosphere seems superb.
And yes, I will be cheering for the Blue Jays! (Once I work out the rules...)

Here is some specific info on which seat to buy.

We prefer the 200 level and it may be the best for your fisrt time at a baseball game. Say sections 230 to 234 or 214 to 218 . On the 200 level there is no difference between east and west. The view is best from the 200 level

The 100 level is for serious fans. Seats in the yellow sections are great but most are held by season ticket holders. You have to pay attention in the 100 level .

The 500 Level is also Great. You are a bit high but the seats are cheap and you don't have to take the game seriously . Sections 528 to 533 .
The sections behind home plate are a bit more lively , but you have to take the game seriously.

Watch out for balls flying into the crowd if you're not behind the net ... it's quite a trophy to get one but they land pretty hard!

Have a great time at the game, however if you want to root for the winning team you should cheer for the Chicago Cubs. As a poor suffering Chicago Cubs fan this may be our year to win what is considered the World Series Championship although except for Toronto all the other teams that play for the Championship are from the United States. Don't be surprised if the loudest cheers are from the Cubs fans who will be attending the game. Check out my site or search for Wrigley Field (the Chicago Cubs home park) for what a real baseball park should look like.

Well my seat is booked in the 234 seating area. Wohoo! Cant wait to have a fragrant nosegay at the stadium.
The Blue Jays website has a great buy ticket and print facility so have no worries about queing to pick mine up on the day.
Two things though, what time would you advise getting to the game for a 1.07pm kick off, or hit off, (or whatever its called in baseball?!)
And can drink be bought in the ground and drank at your seat? Here in blighty no booze is allowed with you into the stadium at a soccer game for fear of a punch up.
I once got punched at a particulary rubbish game for saying "At least I know one person more depressed than me, Leonard Cohen ha ha" (expecting the bloke beside me to get the joke) to which he replied "Thats the Israeli Prime Minister your'e slagging off you little s***" and punched me in the stomach.

You could get there by 12h30 to get a feel of the stadium, the players, the warm-up etc. Thelines are never that bad.

As for the rest, don't worry. You can drink as much as you want and if you make that Leonard Cohen joke again, your neighbor should understand given that he is Canadian

If you go early you can watch the players warming up ready for the "first pitch". Alcohol is available, and food, but you can't take your own in. I've seen people tossed out for this. There is a police presence and I doubt you'll see any bad or drunken behavior; it's not tolerated. Baseball is very much a family game. Have a good time!
