Hello, Does anyone have prices for a single ticket from BUDAPEST to SARAJEVO on 06/08/08??
I have found out that the IC 802 goes every day, but can't find a price. Can I buy it online or wait until I am int the country? Thanks so much!! Katrina |

A day train leaves Budapest (Keleti pu. station) daily at 9.30, arriving in Sarajevo at 21.39. One-way tickets cost 52 Euro. There is a dining car. You will be bothered at least four times for your passport, and around four times for your ticket, and once by very nosy and insistent EU customs staff.
At the moment you cannot buy online international tickets.

Find out what the discount for return trips is. In some relations, there's a 60% discount on return trips, which makes buying a return ticket cheaper than buying it one way only. The best is to buy a ticket for the route Budapest-Sarajevo-Magyarboly (the latter is the Hungarian-Croatian border station, already in Hungary, so if you ask for such a ticket, it is already counted as a return trip as you return to Hungary - theoretically). In this case you pay about (50+25)*0,4=30 EUR if there's a 60% discount on return trips - if only 50%, then 75*0,5=37,5 EUR. That's still less than 52 EUR.

Your post has been helpful. I plan to take the Budapest-Sarajevo train on July 1. Based on your experience, am I likely to get a reservation when I go to the ticket window the day I arrive in Budapest (June 28)? Does this train sell out well in advance? Do you know of any way to buy the ticket now? I'm in Paris and neither the French nor German railroads can sell me a ticket. Thank you.

Currently it is possible to order online ticket only for the inland passanger trains, but also the international booking will be possible soon. The best way is, to buy the ticket just one day before departure. Most of the passengers are getting their tickets right before boarding.

The operation of international trains is still a question of international political relations in a lot of cases. This train started operation a few years ago and I suppose the reason why it still runs is not the high number of passengers: it is only a 2-car stock attached to other domestic trains, at least on the Budapest-Pecs leg. And maybe one car would be enough, but then how would the two states share the running costs equally? :) So I don't think you'd have any problem getting a ticket.
