I would highly recommend that you do a quick tour.
The Kakudu National Park area is HUGE.
It's great to drive if you have the time, but 2 days you haven't. There are many tours that you can do. If you did drive it you would miss out seeing many things as it takes time to get your bearings and know where to go.
Google for tours, many backpackers have cheap quick tours.
It's a fantastic area.

I agree with Anne. I've been there many times, and will also be back in June. On your limited timeframe of only 2 days, a tour would be best. That way you won't have to waste the time at a car rental agency, figure out all the road maps, what to see, and so forth. It is very large! The guided tours will show you the highlights, if not everything the park has to offer, and they will have good commentary. If you had a longer time to spend there, then I'd say rent a car and explore on your own.

Here are some potential tour operators that you could consider, to Google:
--Kakadu Dreams
--Kadadu Tour/s
--Wilderness Adventures
--Animal Tracks
--Adventure Tours

Good luck and I hope you have a marvelous time!

Hi For 2 days you are best with a tour. We drove there, but had 5 days however I was also attending a conference at the Crocodile Hotel. Went fishing on 2 days at Yellow River and really must go back to see all the other good sights.

Good Luck,
Mike

The Crocodile Hotel is nice, and I've stayed there, too. You can't tell it from the ground, but if you see the hotel from the air, it was built in the shape of a crocodile. Dining in the dining room or outside by the pool is equivalent to being in the croc's stomach! However, it is well designed and fortunately does not feel like some theme park.
