You will need more than a jerry can. The road to Cape York is called a dirt track. So bring some spare springs and shock absorbers, a whole stack of belts and pulleys and other bits and pieces that look like they belong on an engine, a kitchen sink with fawcet for water, food to bribe the locals for a right of passage, etc etc. AND wear teeth guards so you don't crack and chip your teeth when you hit the bumps. Enjoy the trip.

Jerry can are not that expensive. Buy one in Cairns and take it anyway, a just in case thing:)
At this time of year there will be many others doing this trip,it's the nomade season here, so I am sure someone will stop and help:)
I envy your trip, I have only be as far as Cooktown and the Cape is on my list of things to do. Have a wonderful trip.

Talk to the locals up in Cooktown before you set off. And prepare well. Its not a normal road trip.

If you need help with stuff or want to do some fishing in cooktown before you go up, talk to my cousin Leonard at Reel River Sportfishing in Cooktown.

What do you get when you put a yank who has no idea and a bloody aussie who doesn't give a sh*t together? You go to Cape York with no preparation and have a great time! Thanks all for the reply but I didn't get a chance to check this forum before I left. We got the rental car and went with no extra fuel and no spares, no winch, no snorkel. We did the Old Telegraph Track, but only game enough to get to Elliot Fall (I don't think I want to attempt to cross the Jardine River). We survived, in one piece. It was good. :D

Well done. We all knew already. The locals sent up smoke signals while it was all happening. Posted it on Youtube as well. You are now celebrities. Onya

Glad to hear you had a great time. My most memorable trips are those that I didn't really prepare for. I did the Gibb River Road trip this way and boy did we have some fun!
