Prague Good day trip between Prague & Dusseldorf
Posted: Sat May 17, 2008 09:26 PM UTC
I will be in Prague for three days and then have to head to Dusseldorf on the 5th day. I thought of spending Day 4 in some place in between the two.

Any suggestions?

if you are driving from prague to Dusseldorf, I recommend Dresden or Bacharach, DE.

Definitely depends on the means of transport you're using and what you're into. If you like to have a break in the countryside you could go to the Harz mountains and the city of Quedlinburg. Very nice and just half-way between Prague and Dusseldorf. You could reach that place by train, but car would be preferable.

Otherwise you could stop at any major city in between, if you haven't already been there: Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Hannover. All of them are interesting enough for a day trip. There are also some nice medieval towns around Hannover like Celle, Goslar or Hameln.

Thanks!

I should also mention that I will be traveling on my own. Not sure if I'll be renting a car. How difficult is it to understand the signs in German?

Most likely, any place I go will be by train or by bus.

Going by train or bus, I recommend Dresden, located at a major rail intersection, and probably on the most direct route from Prague to Dusseldorf. You don't need to speak German to understand the universal road signs, but renting a car is probably not your best option.

Where is the website to look at the train schedules from Prague to Dusseldorf? I can't seem to locate it when I search on google.

Also, since I'll be traveling by myself, I think the day trip along the way should be in a city - nothing overly romantic. Ha!

I just found a website for Germanraildirect. It says a ticket from Czech Republic to Germany, 2nd class for travel over 5 days, is $312! Do they offer one off tickets - oneway, one time use only? That seems like so much money so I wonder if I am missing something here.

Train or bus travel within the Czech Republic for non reserved is relatively cheap, but train travel in Germany for single travellers, except weekends, is outrageous. Unfortunately, I don't know a website for Czech.
