Lourdes The Hague to Lourdes and back
Posted: Sat May 17, 2008 07:09 PM UTC
Hello,

I've never been to Europe myself, but I'm researching for my uncle.
He wanted to leave The Hague to Lourdes on July 7, 2008 and back again to The Hague on July 11, 2008. And he's in his 60s.

1. What's a good way to go from The Hague to Lourdes which is not expensive. He has no preference between train or plane.

2. Any recommendations on places to stay in Lourdes? He is ok to stay at guesthouses or homestays or maybe hostels to save some money.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!! :)

The Thalys train from The Hague (Den Haag HS station) to Paris Nord station at 70-130 euro return trip (depending on when you book, preferably as early as possible, which would be about NOW if you want advantage of the lowest prices).

Then from Paris Montparnasse station to Lourdes (7-8 hour trip), with TGV train, currently priced between 135-175 euro, return trip.

So the total return trip should be about 200-300 euro.

The distance is just over 1300 kms, the travel time would be about 10-12 hours.

For a clear schedule (but without prices), you could use the German rail website: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en (in English).

Looking at those prices I would say if your uncle wants to save money, he better takes the organized bus tour.

Accommodation in Lourdes is usually very reasonable by European standards. You can get a hotel room for as little as thirty euro a day. I usually spend about forty euro per day and that gets me a small, clean hotel within walking distance of the Sanctuaries. The Hotel St Andre and the Hotel Aneto are two that I can definitely recommend as I have stayed at both of them in the past and have bee more than happy. My favourite is the Hotel Moderne but it is quite a bit more expensive, but well worth it. You can book at www.venere.com or www.bookings.com
