| Munich | Taxi to St Moritz? Posted: Sat May 17, 2008 10:36 AM UTC
Is it possible to get a taxi from Munich to St Moritz in Switzerland and will the price be realistic? I have heard that it can be driven in 3-4 hours but I am not a driver. Also the train is not realistic to me due to the time it takes and the number of changes. Advice much appreciated :)

The price of a taxi for such a distance will be realistic: it will cost an arm and a leg and your first-born.
The train is the way to go.

I can understand your reluctance to take the train, because it does take quite a while and involve some changes.
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/i It does take about 3 and a half hours to drive, according to online routeplanners. A taxi will cost you an absolute fortune, I'm sure, whereas he train will only be around 76 euros. Perhaps you could view the train journey as part of an adventure?

From Munich Airport it's rather 4+ hours.
Munich airport homepage list plenty of limousine services. Most of them will drive you wherever you want to go to. http://www.munich-airport.de/en/consumer/anab/transLimo/ The transfer services are only traveling certain routes. They are cheaper, but this is really too far from Munich for such a service. To get you an idea http://www.german-transfer.de is offering transfers from airports to any place in Germany. They have a similar service in Switzerland, but no idea if the travel across borders. Their price finding function does not. But I've checked for a similar distance (315 km) inside Germany and their VIP Exclusive Shuttle rate is approx. EUR 420 one way.

Funny name when you think of it. ;-) But yes there's a German equivalent for it. Chloe, I understand you are not a driver, and you're not accompanied by somebody who could drive you? Would car sharing be a possibility? St. Moritz is of course not the most frequently listed city. And I would like to let you know that DB provide a special service for people with disabilities. Maybe you want to contact Deutsche Bahn. The information available online is sadly only in German: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/home/handicap/handicap.shtml

I'm surprised WEL was not aware of German law. There is a similar accessibility law in the UK: I think it may be an EU thing which has to be adopted by all EU countries, however gradually.
There is, however, no indication that the OP has any disability. I took her post to mean she simply did not want to make a very long train journey, with changes.

I think the relevant url for Germany is in the post above mine.
For the UK: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/Everyda will give an overview. The law was passed in 1995 and gave institutions/companies etc a nine-year 'breathing space' to make appropriate changes. There have since been several court cases, one of the first involving Debenhams (a large UK department store chain).

> The German "American Act of Disabilities":
> I invite everybody to take the S-Bahn around in Munich. First off, it's called "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990", an "Act of Disabilities" would be something completely different. ;-) Secondly: There's a lot that needs to be done, no doubt. As for the links, we're going completely off-topic now, but well ... at your service: Art. 3 Abs. 3 Satz 2 GG: "Niemand darf wegen seiner Behinderung benachteiligt werden" (which echoes the core of the "Americans with Disabilities Act") And then of course SGB IX, basically the complete book.

Thank you very much, your responses were helpful.
350 euros is a little more than I was looking to pay .. in response to an earlier post, I have no firstborn and want to keep all my limbs safe so I guess taxi is not looking very realistic ;) LOL Perhaps there is somewhere in between the two I could go for a day to break up a long train journey?..

Ah, that's why. I don't know how old your kid is, but at least ICEs have a "Mother & Child" compartment and a changing table next door.
With that being said, you could spend a day in Garmisch or Hohenschwangau (Neuschwanstein Castle).

Lindau would make a nice stopover between Munich and St. Moritz.
http://web20.icserver3.de/index.php?sid=1027 Nice and compact. The station is directly next to the harbour and the old town. All trains towards Switzerland stop there. But you can save if you use regional trains from Munich. Than you could travel using the Bavaria Ticket (EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons traveling together). The ALX trains are not much slower than the EC trains. DB timetable http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en From: Munich To: Lindau and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you like to use the Bavaria Ticket. In Switzerland there is no price difference between regional and far distance trains like in Germany. From Lindau you can make it with 2 changes to St. Moritz. One of them is anyway unavoidable, as the RhB network, where St. Moritz is in, is a meter gauge network. Also rather slow. But stunning scenery. http://www.rhb.ch/Details-of-the-network.345.0.htm

If you've only used UK trains you'll find European ones much more pleasant. But breaking the journey might be a good idea, if you have time/funds to do so.

An overnight stop + train fare would still be a lot cheaper than 350 euros, so you may well have answered your own question.
