Pre booking isn't always necessary. Many travellers decide to go to Kanchanburi and then look at the local operators in the town.
We have visited the temple / zoo in the past and we simply hired a car / taxi from Kanchanburi town to the temple, around 40 minutes away. The tigers were released later in the afternoon when we visited and kept caged up in the morning, so do check beforehand when is a good time to plan your visit.

Greetings from adelaide, australia!
I've just accidentally posted this reply in the other forum. But...I can recommend Hellfire pass tours for tours to tiger temple. I did a private tour from bangkok, that not only included the tiger temple, but also kanchanaburai (river kwai), floating markets and hellfire pass. Lunch included. Advantage of private tour...take your time, itinerary at own pace etc...spend as long or as little as you want in each place. All for around $220 aussie dollars. Oopss...its late in australia..time for bed.

If I had a choice of Hellfire Pass or the Tiger Temple I would chose Hellfire Pass EVERY time.

We used a private guide and driver. You only go to the places that you choose that you actually want to see (not lots of 'extra' stops to buy things you never wanted) and are are only regulated by how long you need to get to the next place. We used the one of Tong's guides and you will find her mentioned a lot through this and many other forums.
You pay for your entry fees and any meals you eat, you also pay for fuel out of Bangkok. It is well worth the every cent. Also with Tong at the Tiger Temple, you get the added bonus of being able to see Bam Bam the Sun Bear up close in his cage to feed and cuddle. No one alse can do this. Tong is very well respected at the Temple. www.tourwithtong.com
