Schloss Neuschwanstein Trains to the castle?
Posted: Sat May 17, 2008 08:44 AM UTC
Hi

I am travelling from Salzburg to the castle, and was hoping to take a train to Fussen, but on bahn.de there are many options, one of which is: Fußenberg, Wenzenbach - is this the right station? Or would it be better to travel to Hohenschwangau instead?
I notice both take a similar amount of time.
Also I would like to go to the bridge for a view of Neuschwanstein but have my elderly mother travelling with me (very active but in her 60s) and I do not want her to walk. is there a better way of getting to the top and is it possible to take a horse and carriage?

Right station? No. Check your spelling. The name of the town is ether "Füssen" or, if you cannot type the u with the two dots on top, "Fuessen".

this site tells you how to get to the castle and you can take a horse and carriage drive to the top )and back down):http://www.neuschwanstein.com

By horse-drawn carriage
Departure point: Hotel Müller, Alpseestraße in Hohenschwangau. From the carriage stand at the castle it is about 300m - approximately a 5-minute walk - to the castle entrance. Tickets: Uphill journey: 5 € / Downhill journey: 2.50 €.

It is a really beautiful castle - hope you enjoy the trip

When you reach Hohenschwangau, check at the castle ticket office for the Marienbrucke bus service, this takes you from the village to a short distance
from the bridge, the remaining walk is about 300 metres, has good pathways but is fairly steep. From the bridge it is about a 15min walk to the castle, visiting tickets for the castle must be booked in the village as with the bus tickets. Enjoy the views.

Just to clear it up, the horse and carts do not go up to the bridge, they stop a short distance from the castle. The Marionbrucke bus is the one to get if you want to go to the bridge, this still stops a short distance away with a steep climb, but there is a viewing platform where your Mother could possibly wait and look down over the village of Hohenschwangau, the other castle and the lake.
