I will be travelling by train from Bruges to Amsterdam on my way back to Schipol Airport. I need to overnight in Amsterdam on 4th September and would like to find a reasonably priced accommodation close to the train station. I would be grateful for any help that anyone can offer.

Throw a rock through the window of the nearby police station - you'll get a free overnight stay...

If it's just for overnight and not a Amsterdam visit, why not go by train to Schiphol Airport and take the cheapest hotel there; see:

I seem to remember there is an Ibis right necxt to the station. As you look at the front of the station, it is to the left.
