| Civitavecchia | To Rome or not? Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 07:18 PM UTC
I am going on a cruise on June 6 that includes the port of Civatevecchia. Is there anything to do there or is it better to just take the 1 hour ride to Rome? I have already been to Rome 2yrs. ago and saw The Colloseum, Vatican ,the catacombs etc. If we should have to go to Rome what is the best way to get there. Any info would be great!

There is far more to see in Rome than can possibly be accomplished in one visit.
You could, for example, concentrate on visiting Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome. Metro to Pyramide, then suburban train (30 minutes) to Ostia Antica station. 5 minutes to the site, which is, in effect, a mini-Pompeii. Or you could visit some of the less-frequently renovated churches, such as San Stefano in Rotondo. Or you could spend the time exploring a paricular area, such as Trastevere. From Civitavecchia you can take the train to Rome, which is easiest imo. Journey time is around an hour, depending on train time. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for times and fares (click 'buy').

I don't know how long you have in port but to get to Rome it would take you an hour and a half to get to Rome from Civitavecchia and the same amount of time to return. When I went on my cruise I just stayed in Civitavecchia and went shopping, its much cheaper than Rome. Or if you don't want to stay there take a shore excursion with the ship.

Civatevecchia has quite a nice atmosphere and I agree with Antonio that the shopping seems cheaper. If you are there on a Saturday there is a terrific market. Not sure if this is everyday though. It was quite facinating to watch what seemed like the entire town out doing their weekly shopping.
Some Civatevecchia - Rome trains (regional services) stop at Santa Marinella, a popular seaside town just a few minutes away if you are looking for somewhere have a relaxing lunch.
