Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsundays are nowhere near Brisbane, this is an estimated 900 to 1000 km north of Brisbane.

In Brisbane, I would take the boat to North Stradbroke Island. Really wonderful beaches there.

Whitehaven Beach is lovely but as already stated a LONG way from Brisbane.
There are some great beaches on the Gold Coast and on the Tweed Coast which can be reached by train/bus or bus - about 1 - 2 hours from Brisbane depending where you go. The most popular - or known - beaches are Surfers Paradise, then Burleigh Heads and Currumbin for great surfing, and Coolangatta, all in QLD. In New South Wales you have great surf beaches at Duranbah and Kingscliff. The whole Gold Coast is actually beaches so you can swim or enjoy the sights to your hearts delight.

Why not consider staying down ther a night.

If you are going to swim please be careful tho - there have been quite a few drownings again this year, mostly tourists who do not obey the safe swim signs or go in out of their depth unaware of rips.

If you don't want to go to the Gold Coast, going across to the island will be fine too.

There are some good beaches in Brisbane, some of the popular ones are up on the Redcliffe Peninsular.

Also dont miss the beaches up on the sunshine coast, much better than the ones on to Gold coast to my mind.

Hi Louise,

Is this all a bit confusing?

While Brisbane is close to the sea its really on a river and bay hence there are no 'city' beaches as most tourists expect. However, you do have a myriad of choices within the greater area which is unsurpassed for the beach goer - although not Whitehaven as has been explained to you.

While the Gold Coast (south of Brisbane) may suit you (its a party place as well), I second the suggestion of also trying the Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane) with great beaches all up this stretch of coast.

While you can easily get to these places as a day tour, I suggest you consider staying in multiple places. Brisbane on arrival then down to the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach) and up to Mooloolaba or Noosa to take in the Sunshine Coast. All places mentioned are great for young people and have plenty of action!

Hope this of help and we are all happy to help further.,
John

Hi Whitehaven Beach is near Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays Passage approx 1.5 hour flight from Brisbane. We flew to Hamilton Island 2 years ago with Jetstar, cheap internet fare only $70.

There is Southbank of course, which has a human-made inner-city beach. No waves though, only a pool! Very picturesque and always a favourite among visitors. The beach is next to the Brisbane River and also close to the museum, performing arts, restaurants and bars.
