| New York City | New York Italian Diner Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 01:30 PM UTC
Dear NYers,
Could somebody tell me where I can find a 'Godfather' style classic New York style Italian diner? Also the traditional American style diners you see in movies with waitress refilling coffee with a coffee jug. Ta Sybil |

There are many; some real, some touristy. In 1972 Joseph Gallo was shot and killed in Umberto's Clam House in Little Italy(386 Broome ST). In Greenwich Village I would recommend Rocco Restaurant, 181 Thompson St. And up in Times Square Carmine's is a very good choice (200 W 44th St.)
There are American style Diners also although I can't really recommend any one in particular, maybe someone else can help you on that.

Manhattan doesn't really have a lot of diners - the kind you see in movies. There used to be one on W. 57th St., but I'm not sure if it's still there. There are lots of 'coffee shops,' and those have the refilling coffee routine and good breakfasts, too. Large delis are the same.. the Carnegie, Stage etc.

Diner, you say? You want the American Experience, with fattening food and bottomless coffee cup? You must go to Junior's, in downtown Brooklyn, right on the corner of Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue. It's right on top of the DeKalb Ave subway station (B,M,Q,R), and one block away from the Nevins St subway (2,3,4,5). Charbroiled hamboigas, hominy grits for breakfast, world-famous cheesecake for dessert. and where else can you get fried cheesecake?? With pics of Bill Clinton and other celebs gracing the walls, THIS is the New York diner experience. Then take the Q train 1 stop into Manhattan, over the Manhattan Bridge, no less, (or walk over the Manhattan Bridge, and work off those empty calories!) and stroll into Chinatown. Have the salt-baked chicken over white rice, with pea pods on the side, at the Great New York Noodlehouse, on the corner of Bowery and Bayard St. Stay away from the duck tongues!
