hi and welcome to VT.
What's your budget? You could look through the VT Amsterdam hotel suggestions or try www.hotels.nl (the latter with map). There are also hostels in Amsterdam (www.stayokay.com) or try www.bedandbreakast.nl Amsterdam is not large, you could widen your search considerably within the canal area (center).

Hello,
Try the Flying Pig Downtown at the Nieuwendijk: http://www.flyingpig.nl/hostels/flyingpigdowntown.shtml and http://www.flyingpig.nl/ for all of them... Cheers Dennis

Amsterdam is great.
You can try the Hotel Kabul. It's a Hostel in the red light district, I stayed there a while back. Walk out from the train station, if that's where you come into town, and turn left over a bridge to a street called Warmoesstraat and it turns right and down a bit. The hostel is about 200-300 metres down. Check http://www.travelcreek.com/Amsterdam.htm for more info on Amsterdam, you will have a great time!

another vote here for the flying pig.
good location and good on safety too. many hostels in amsterdam has a theft problem because of the drug scene, but the flying pig does a good job at securing peoples stuff.
