| Cascais | Good Cascais restaurant and beach recommendations please! Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 12:01 AM UTC
We will be arriving in Cascais in 2 weeks time and would like some recommendations of good restaurants. We are looking for good traditional Portuguese sea food restaurants where the locals eat, always a good sign, and also modern trendy restaurants.
Where are the best beaches close by? We will have a hire car so a short drive won’t be a problem. Any other “Must do’s” whilst in the area would be helpful. Many Thanks, Andy. |

Sorry I can't answer any specifics about restaurants. We did try a pretty good Thai restaurant (I know it seems strange going Thai in Portugal but we were craving something spicy!) which was also pricier than we thought it would be. Lots of restaurants though in Cascais in the old town center. ..just can't recall the names. We stayed in Estoril and really enjoyed the waterfront walk between the two towns (Estoril has the largest casino in Europe...and the smokiest, I think!) What I do want to highly recommend though is a trip to Sintra, an easy drive from Cascais. It is a really lovely mountain town, with crisp air and a sort of mystical feel. There are 2 great palaces there, the National Palace and the Palace of Pena. Both are fascinating and well worth the time. The town itself has tons of small shops, cafes etc and makes a great day trip from Cascais.

I wrote a tip about my favourite restaurant in Cascais in my Cascais page. I think its name is Dom Pedro I. I don't remember it now; sorry.

Here's my tip about that restaurant; RESTAURANTE DOM PEDRO I.
This restaurant serves very good food. It has a dining room decorated with beautiful azulejos. There is also has a small terrace if you like to eat outside. The service was good. Favorite Dish: At Dom Pedro they have a menu of the day that includes fish or meat; vegetables, dessert, coffee and a drink. I liked everything I had there. Prices: less than US$10 Phone: 351 21 482 02 74. Address: Beco dos Invàlidos, 32. Directions: This restaurant is located quite near the Municipal square. Website: www.dompedrocascais.com

With a car, for seafood, you should go to Ericeira, one of the most beautiful beaches close to Lisbon, and one of the best places in the world to eat seafood. To choose the restaurant it's easy: just look at the lines outside them!
Another trip you should do, again merging beach and seafood, is Sesimbra, across the river. Gorgeous views, better beach, and good fish. A third option, a little further (one hour driving), is Nazaré. The most beautiful beach of Portugal (usually overcrowded in summer), the best sardines, and more. In the way, or close by, some "must see": Obidos, Alcobaça, Batalha... Two more places (not so good as beaches) where portuguese go expressly to eat fish and seafood are Porto das Barcas and Peniche. Cascais is a lovely place, with excellent(pricey) restaurants, but not exactly a place where the Portuguese go for a restaurant. At a short distance you have Praia das Maçãs, and Sintra, of course, that you shouldn't miss.

Hello,
I have just returned from the 2 week trip around Portugal and Spain. We have stayed 1 night at the camping near Cascais (around 10 km to North, I really can not find the title of the place, it is on the road N247-6. We have asked the receptionist where we could find a local restaurant and he recommended the one 3 min walk from the camping. I can not remember the name either.. Anyway, we had the best meal and service there (totally we paid 40 Eur for 3 adults). Sorry, not a big help with this. But we also have noticed that we have to look for a place where locals eat, that is the best recommendation. So good luck ! Agne
