I am working on a 40day itinerary and have completed all but the last 6 days. I prefer not returning to Tokyo as that was done on the front end. I am interested in suggestions for the NE part of the island. The following is current itin

I stayed at the Hattoji Villa. Loved it there! I don't think you need so many days there though. It's a very isolated area. My friend and I stayed 2 nights and it was enough.
I hope when you are in Kyoto you will visit other parts of Kansai too, like Osaka, Kobe, Nara, and Himeji. Be sure to go to Arashiyama & Sagano in Kyoto too! :) Sorry, I don't know where else your journey can take you. Maybe Nikko? Where do you fly out of?

I can see that at the end of your trip you´re quite close to Nagano. That makes excellent distance to Takayama, Matsumoto and Nikko. Three places in Japan that I absolutely love. ALso if you're flying out from Tokyo you wont be too far away.
