Check the Watana Mansion. They have an excellent internet deal that includes pickup and return to the airport. The hotel isn't fancy, it's a blue-collar establishment frequented by tourists and Thais. There is a pool, restaurant and minimarket. They have internet access. Taxis and buses and the Metro are all at your disposal. The rooms are clean and have A/C, TV, fridge, full bath and a balcony. I have stayed there 3 times and will do so again. This hotel is in a real Thai neighborhood, not on a busy commercial street, although it's right off of a main boulevard (Ratchadapisek) with all sorts of businesses including shopping centers. When you're out and about and want to take a taxi back to the hotel, just say "Din Dang, Ratchada (roll the R) sip jet". This tells the driver to take you to the Din Daeng section of Bangkok to street #17 off of Ratchadapisek Blvd. The hotel is 100 meters up from the boulevard.

Just a thought

Have you checked into the possibility of an increased baggage allowance if you start your RTW trip via the US.

I live in Australia and if on RTW I go via the US first, my baggage allowance for the whole trip is 2 bags, not 20K total. Its worth looking into. Also it makes sense to have SE Asia at the end so as you are not transporting all that shopping with you the rest of the way

Just my thoughts

Have a great time

I have a report on my Bangkok page about the Dynasty Inn Grande on soi 6. It is in the Sukhumvit area, reasonably priced, quiet area and nice pool. You won't see it on the agency sites, they only sell direct, so get the link from my page.

There's a brand new boutique hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11 called Le Fenix. It has one of the most unique pools and rooftop cafes in town, and is very close to the skytrain (nana) and several good restaurants.
I think they have deals for about 1500 baht ($48) per night. Website is http://www.lefenix-sukhumvit.com/ look under the facilities link for the pool pix - you are about 4 stories above the street looking straight down through the glass!

We stayed during our RTW trip in the Prince Palace Hotel
A modern hotel with all facilities and swimming pools.

Prince Palace Hotel is located in the Bobae Tower on Damrongrak Road (along the Khlong Sen Seb). We liked this location: a garment market on the first 11 floors of the tower and outside the hotel in the surrounding roads and a fruit and vegetable market a little bit further away. No western fast food chains, but just a small supermarket around the corner or street food vendors and an ATM for our Thai Baht. The main tourist sights are not too far away and easy accessible by taxi (15 minutes) or longtail boat (a couple of minutes).

happy travels and enjoy your RTW trip

Many Westerners like Silom Village Inn, it was very popular when I have been there with my wife. Go to Sawadee.com for better travel reviews though - plus it has photos and prices based on both tourist and the the off-season.
