The number of infections is down about 80%. Dengue is a summer disease. In fall and winter it's not much of a problem.

The Dengue-Fever recurrence in Rio de Janeiro is decreasing. However in some Rio's neighbourhoods Dengue still persists. So, you shall take a special care of staying in Santa Cruz, Campo Grande, and some othes places on the west zone (Bangu, Barra da Tijuca, Barra de Guaratiba, Curicica, Deodoro, Freguesia, Guaratiba, Itanhangá, Jacarepaguá, Joá, Sepetiba, Vargem Grande, Vargem Pequena). I am sending below a Rio's map link showing these locations:
http://www.riomapaturistico.com/mapa_dos_baiirros_ampliado.htm Some other bad places to stay in Rio is Duque de Caxias and Belford Roxo. These towns are near to Rio in a zone called Baixada Fluminense. I am sending a link concerned in showing these Rio's neighbours: http://rjtv.globo.com/Jornalismo/RJTV/0,,9098,00.html Cassiovieggore

Sveer is right, The problem is decreasing with the coming of winter there and a little hard work on the part of the govenment. Many recent visitors on the other Brazil forums report not even feeling a mosquito over their whole visit.
No need to know the whole city and it's zones. Most tourists stay in Copacabana or Ipanema by the beach (where there has been less problem than in some of the poorer neighborhoods or outlying areas) and go to the main tourist sights of Corcovado and Sugarloaf (on the breezy heights). Take a look on www.ipanema.com if you want to get an idea of these tourist locations. It also has lots of good information that your mother might find useful.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Unfortunately my mother will stay in Hotel Atlantico Sul – „Located in one of the areas of Rio De Janeiro, the South Atlantic is far of the intense transit of the areas central offices of the city. In the end of the Bar of the Tijuca and beginning of the Recreation of the Bandeirantes, next to the Riocentro". She is there because she takes part in the world Veterans championships and that is the nearest hotel. But she will use extensively anti-moskito spray and as already sprayed her clothes, too... she is a bit afraid... before going to Rio she will do a trip to Salvador do Bahia and the waterfalls... but there is no threat of dengue,or?

As you know, dengue has been a problem this year in many parts of Brazil. Your mother should be aware of the symptoms of dengue. If she shows symptoms, she should get immediate treatment. Many symptoms resemble the flu and start 10 days after exposure. Most people in good health recover with no problem.
