Siauliu Apskritis Travel Forum

Hi, we would like to go to Hill of Crosses in the coming August, anyone could give us some idea should we go there from Vilnius or Kaunas. Which way is more convenient, more frequent bus running? We plan to have one-day trip, and take a taxi from Siauliu to Hill of crosses. Should we ask Tourist Centre to call a taxi to make sure it waits for us for returing to Siauliu?

The buses are rather frequent from Kaunas and from Vilnius. A distance Kaunas-Šiauliai is shorter as twice, compared to the distance Vilnius-Panevežys-Šiauliai. But a route Vilnius-Kaunas-Šiauliai is not direct, not fast and not reasonable.
Timetable Vilnius-Šiauliai (and Vilnius-any other city) - http://www.autobusai.lt/lt/schedule_lt.php . "Iš Vilniaus" means "From Vilnius", "I Vilniu" means "To Vilnius".
At Kaunas bus station one have to look for a platform "Kedainiu kryptis" (Kedainiai direction), the timetables are put up there.
All Tourist Centres are closed on weekends. But if it's a workday, they can arrange a taxi to Hill of Crosses. Otherwise deal with a driver directly and tell him to wait for you - anyway the driver have to return back, so there won't be a problem for him to wait about 30-40 min. And 30 min is quite enough.

the distance between Siauliai and Kryziu kalnas (Cross hill) is 12 km, so it is a good choise to use taxi. When you take a taxi from Siauliai, please, already agree with a driver that he will wait for you there and then will take you back. It is nothing bad if you agree from the beginning, that when waiting, he has taxometer off, otherwise a driver can use a situation and you will be charged for waiting. But as I told, it is not strange here to agree about price and conditions before you go.
But Šiauliai tourism information center has good service with the taxies - 40 litas for driving both ways plus waiting for 30 minutes it's good deal. There is a shedule of busses going to Kryziu kalnas in their page. Only a thing, that you will still have to walk a bit from the buss station to the destination. In summer the center is working also on weekends - Saturday from 10:00 - 16:00 and Sundays 10:00 -15:00.
