Train is usually more expensive than bus, but buses take longer than trains.
Most long-distance UK coaches are run by www.nationalexpress.com However, there are no direct coaches from Maidenhead: you will probably have to go into London and change buses there. You should book coach tickets in advance, either online or at agents/offices (there aren't too many of those, so online is best).
Train times and fares on www.nationalrail.co.uk
Trains never get 'full' but you have to book in advance to reserve a seat (otherwie you just stand uintil there is a seat available). You can also get cheaper fares in advance (though not always). You can book online (although ome VT-ers have had trouble paying by credit/debit card from abroad) or simply go to any station up to 6pm tthe day before travel. However, cheap fares like this often sell out.
From Maidenhead to Liverpool takes 3-4 hours, with a couple of changes (the Maidenhead train goes to Paddington and the Liverpool train goes from Euston, so you will have to change stations by Tube). The site will detail changes if you click 'see details'. Cheapest one-way fare for morning departures on 19th May is 54.50 (not an advance ticket!), but you will have to check your preferred train time/day.
A compromise solution might be to get the train from Maidenhead into London, then get the coach from London Victoria coach station. National Express run several coaches to Liverpool daily from there, journey time 5-6 hours, one-way fares from 10GBP.
