We really like Circus Circus. It's an excellent location and the kids will love it there. There's ongoing circus acts. As it's an older establishment, they do offer better room rates than most of the newer ones.

Excalibur is a good choice too. It's near the monorail and they have one of the best pools in Vegas - recently re-done and it gets good sunshine.

They have arcades, the medieval times type dinner, etc.

I know that when everyone comes to my "home", they want to stay on The Strip. However, I would highly recommend staying at the Marriott Residence Inn off-the-Strip. Reasons:
- a weekend summer rate of $179
- a complimentary shuttle bus from the hotel to the Mandalay Bay (i.e. the Shark Reef)on The Strip. From there, use the Duece Bus to move up and down the Strip.
- TWO ROOMS: a living / dining room that has a pull out bed AND a bedroom (with a door) for Mom & Dad. Still just $179 for the "suite"
- Full Kitchen to save on some meal costs
- Complimentary breakfast! POOL!
- You might get a room with a view of the Strip (not sure).
Overall, a great deal for a small family. Stay off-Strip for a very reasonable price and then go to the Strip for all the sights. The hotel is located in a business area (no restaurants or shops) so you will want to take care of all of that while you are on the strip for the day and use the full-size fridge to store food, drinks, and snacks.

I would advise against Circus Circus. It is cheap, but that price reflects the hotel. Outdated and a bad location. I'd recommend (in order):

1) MGM Grand - Good restaurants onsite, good shows, convient location, big arcade, multiple pools, multiple jacuzzis, a lazy river, and a nice casino.

2) Luxor - Good prices, cool design, a few attractions to entertain your kids, and a convient location.

3) Excalibur - A step up from Circus Circus and a much better location.

Keep in mind, rates usually double and sometimes triple between Friday-Sunday.

I know you said your want the strip but if you have a car, i would consider maybe the South Point. It's a bit of a distance from the strip but far better hotel than alot of the cheaper ones on the strip.
We went last year and was really impressed. We have stayed at about 7 other hotels in vegas and i do rate this one for the price we paid.
Enjoy your stay.

If you are traveling to Vegas with a family I have the perfect recommendation for you. A 2 bedroom apt. in a resort half a block from the strip called Desert Rose. My family and I(one baby, my partner and in-laws)all stayed there in their 2 bedroom apt. and it was great. Very affordable too (cheap actually). It has a pool too and they offer a continental breakfast. We are pretty picky about where we stay, especially because we now have a baby and the place was great. So check it out and I recommend it without any hesitations. We walked everywhere from here. We were there last December, so I can't imagine it has changed much since. It's right next door to the Hooters Casino/hotel and in the Area where the Excalibur is. Check out the website: http://www.shellhospitality.com/hotels/desert_rose/index.html

I have two kids and finding a room large enough to accomodate my entire family without being too cramped has been my primary concern. With that in mind, I would recommend the Venetian/Palazzo. They have a lot of specials going on during June/July ($159/night during the week and $249/weekends-check their websites - Venetian and Palazzo are connected, but have two separate sites). I know its not cheap but the Venetian/Palazzo is a very nice property (one of the best in Vegas), lots of shops, a good location to everywhere, and a good pool. With kids, having a pool is key! The rooms at the Venetian/Palazzo are all-suites so there is 700 sq feet, and you can chose a room that has two queen beds and a pull-out full size sofa bed. An alternative less expensive option (which I consider a total hidden gem) is the Tuscany Suites. Check out its webpage http://www.tuscanylv.com/index.php?PID=HOME . Slightly off the main strip, but close to everything.

Have to agree with the Ventian/Palazzo at 159.00 a night its a steal any other city it would be over 500.00 a night for a 5 star hotel, but with the recession the hotels are going down in price to fill them up. The South Point is about 2 miles south of the other big hotels but drove by the other day and a sign said 79.00 a night for week nights Sun To Thurs. Ceasers Palace is always nice. The Palms is nice but off the strip nice pool but might be more for adults. If you want cheap the Budget Suites off Tropicana you can get a 2 bedroom for about 300.00 a week.it's about 3 years old with a pool wireless internet and about 1 mile to MGM.
