| Tallinn | Getting around with a Pram and bad knees! Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 11:57 PM UTC
Tere!
We've got a day in Tallinn in May. Looking forward to it very much! The question is - we've read that Tallinn can be a bit difficult to walk around with cobbled streets and steep streets. In our party, we have a someone with two bad knees - she thinks she can probably manage, but slowly. Just wondering what people who know the lay of the land (literally!) think? Is it worth organising a bus tour for her instead? Any suggestions? She is concerned about not being able to keep up with the other tour members if she joins an organised tour. The other part of our party involves a pram (with 'all terrain' tyres, easy to push but weighing about 30kg loaded up with 2 kids!) - we're thinking that we should be able to manage the cobbled streets but wondered if Toompea Hill would be a bit too ambitious? Thanks in advance! Davin |

Old Town of Tallinn is actually really small, so the person with bad knees should manage it, too. Climbing to Toompea shouldn't be too hard with a pram, either. There are no bus tours in the old town, but you can catch a Hop on, Hop off tour bus just outside it. There are currently two companies offering these tours, both operating with quite similar red double-deckers, I keep on confusing them myself. You can check
http://www.citysightseeing.ee/ and http://www.citytour.ee/index.php?id=426&lang=1 for the tours.

Hi Thirsty Traveller! Thanks so much, that's really helpful.
Another question for any takers :) - how far is it from the port to the Old Town? And what would the options be for travelling it (eg. walking, taxi, bus, etc) and the likely cost? Thanks again!

You're very welcome! :) The old town is just 700 metres from the harbour at most, so no need for any transportation, just your own feet will do, even with bad knees.

I saw a group of people in the old town touring by Segways today, so there's another interesting option. Can't provide you a link, unfortunately, but if you're interested, I'm sure you'll get information from Tourist Info. I also saw several tourist groups on bicycles in old town as well as in Kadriorg's park.
