| Norway | Has anyone been on the Newcastle - Bergen ferry? Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 02:22 PM UTC
I dont have a great deal of money to spend this year on holidays so am trying to do a few short breaks. Just been informed that DFDS do a Newcastle - Bergen three night break. Although it does seem that you spend more time on the ferry than in Norway. Has anyone done this and is this worth doing? I dont mind only having an afternoon or so in Norway, but can you see much on the ferry trip on the way in or is it a case of sea... sea... sea... coach drive around... sea... sea... sea... home?
Any advice/experiences you'd have would be much appreciated! Cheers Jen |

I would not travel 2 days or nights for one day in Norway. We deserve more !

I'm only after a cheap break, and I love being at sea, so for me its not so bad. I know people are always like "why not fly in a few hours then spend a few days there?" but I'd take sailing over flying anytime!

Hi! I live in Bergen, but haven't taken that ferry over to Newcastle. but I know several that have. I doesn't go direct to Bergen but first to Stavanger, then Haugesund. That last part from Haugesund to Bergen is a real treat, as it goes inland through island paradise. We have about 3000 islands on that stretch, and in good weather it's real nice, and in bad weather also calm.

Thanks for your reply! So there will be a lot of nice scenery to see on the way into Bergen? That's good! What are the daylight hours like there in early October? The ship arrives at Bergen at 23:00. Will it be light enough to see things?
Thanks Jen

Ah, yes. It will be dark by then. By at least a couple of hours I think. But the trip up from Stavanger takes many hours, so you'll have lots to see while it's light.
