This used to be the place to go when I was there some years ago.

What kind of music do you like? What is 'dodgy' to you? What part of town do you want to go to?

There are tons of nightclubs along Granville Street. Most of the trendy clubs are on there along with a bunch of sketchy ones as well. Some good pubs along there too.
Give us more info on where they went and what you're looking for (ie. trendy clubs, meat markets, places to just meet all sorts of people, etc.).

vancouver has alot to offer for nitelife. dodgy places can sometimes be the fun places.
best places to meet people of all walks, that are friendly: the cambie, the bourbon, blarney stone- all within gastown or surrounds. along granville?- roxy, buffalo club, and the royal fancy club on granville?- republic. have fun

Honestly? Nightlife changes so frequently in Vancouver, there are different DJ's and different themes on different nights, unless you can be exactly specific about what kind of music you're looking for and what kind of scene you're looking for, you'll just fall in the same trap of getting vague recommendations, and you'll just end up at the crap clubs you're probably wanting to avoid... like The Roxy, for example.
I mean, heck, you're in your 20's Every night club in Vancouver caters to people in their 20's. You'll have to be more specific. What clubs did you end up going to that you found dodgy? Are you looking for a meat market? Are you looking for some niche music scene, like an indie rock night or a drum & bass night? Are you looking for salsa music? A hardcore punk night? Goth/industrial music? A popular 80's night? A high end martini sipping crowd? Does it matter? Most of the nightclubs on Granville Street cater to the same meat market early 20's crowd where the girls dress up sleazy and the guys dress up thuggy.
