If you're staying in San Jose, just use Caltrain. You can either take it all the way from San Jose or drive in as far as the South San Francisco station to park and take it in. It's actually cheaper than BART, although the SF station is a little further from the attractions.

Using Caltrain all the way is a simpler option.
However, if you do want to retain some measure of mobility, parking at the San Bruno or South San Francisco BART stations is easier than it is at Millbrae.

I agree with the suggestions that you take Caltrain all the way. It's much faster than driving if you go during rush hour. Check out the schedule - http://www.caltrain.com/timetable.html - and try to get on a baby bullet train. Once you get to San Francisco, Muni connects to the train station and will take you right into downtown. Or you can walk - it's a long walk, but you can go along the waterfront and enjoy our spectacular views. If you're dead set on BART, you can certainly park at Millbrae. I park there every day (I take Caltrain south) and it's a large lot. I've never seen it fill up. It's also easy to get to from the freeway. Much more so than San Bruno.

hi, thanks for all your inptu, but i must have a car, as i'll be based in San Jose and will go to the Monterey area too. So i'll park the car in one of those BART stations to do SF and then other days, drive along the coast, etc. etc.
thanks!
