| Alaska | 1st alaska trip and want to drive/ferry Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 08:07 PM UTC
Questions please.
We are flying into Seattle the 1st part of June and wanted to ferry up and drive back or drive then ferry. It looks like the ferry from Bellingham is only on Fridays. Can we ferry to Vancouver or Victoria and pick up a ferry? Hoe about drive to Prince Rupert and then ferry. What would anyone suggest? Thanks! |

I would recommend driving the whole way and skip the ferry.

See if this helps....havent looked at it closely as we are doing a cruise from Vancouver to Glacier Bay and back in September. There are many cruise ships that leave from Vancouver and stop in man Alaskan ports.

Why do you not recommend the ferry? It looks like we might miss some places if we drive only. Is there a lot more to see and do if you strictly drive? Thanks for the assistance!

The only places you will miss are tourist traps. Most Alaskans don't consider that part of Alaska...Alaska. The scenery changes when you drive, you will see real wildlife along the highway, and the drive is gorgeous. It's my favorite part of Canada too. I've driven around Victoria Island and it doesn't even compare.

Try these sites
http://www.bcferries.bc.ca/ http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/ http://www.milepost.com I think the Alaska Marine Highway ended their Prince Rupert service but Im not sure about that. Your plan sounds great. I have driven the AlCan and Cassiar, and taken the ferry a few times. I would recommend doing exactly what you plan to do. It is a long drive so you will need some time and preparation. I really enjoy the ferry. It is quite social and you will see some out-of-the way places you would not see otherwise. A few of the ports in the larger towns will be geared towards large scale cruise ship tourism, but you dont have to go too far off the beaten path to get away from that. You might have some trouble if you are planning to rent a car and take it across the border into Canada. Have a great trip Mike
