Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 06:07 PM UTC
Hey everybody!

I'm going to stay in Moscow for the first time in June.

Will anyone tell me wiich is best to carry to Moscow? Dollars or euros? And who can tell me with the currency?

How safe is it to go for a walk during the day?

How much it may be having lunch?

Thank you!

You should carry Russian Rubles with you, dollars and euro's are not considered official currency in Russia.Like most large cities (and Moscow is large)you must use your head and know what sections to stay away from.If you are near the tourist area you will be fine, but like all cities watch your belonging and be aware of people around you, watch for pick pockets.Moscow is a fun city enjoy

Hi, fortunately there are no so called "bad neighbourhood" or bad districts in Moscow. But of course you should watch your pockets in crowded places.
It is save to walk at night as well (I recommend you to see Moscow with highlights at night).

Lunch at normal price (menu) could be $30...$50. But almost all restaurants in the city offer "business-lunch" with or w/o choice from 12:00 to 16:00 for $5...$12. e.g. Restaurant-club "Chineese pilot Jao Da" (m. Kitai Gorod, Staraya Ploschad) in the very center offer very good business-lunch for 190 rbls. Some more in my tips.

$1 = 24 rbls, €1 = 37 rbls
You can change currency at any bank or change machine or (better) use ATM.

Have a good days in Moscow
P.

You better bring euros then dollars. It looks like there are more expensive in exchange. But probably it is better to change them before coming to Moscow. Check with your bank. Cheers

Hi there. Probably ,it is a bit late now, but anyway, for future travellers: I travel to Moscow every year from abroad, so my tip is -
you can bring euros or dollars (I do not recommend any other currency as it is more difficult to change there), does not matter much - it depends from which country you will travel. If you travel from America, then it is better to take dollars as you won't pay commission in your country or won't lose anything for an exchange, but if you travel from Europe or elsewhere excluding America, then it is better to take euros.
Then you can exchange them in roubles at an airport (not very good rate) or at almost any shopping centre, market or metro station.
Another important tip - do not curry all your travel money with you, leave them at the safe place and just take a little what you need for a day, appr. $50-70 spending money, if you don't plan any big shopping or whatever. Moscow's pick pockets are very good, and crowds are almost everywhere. Last summer somebody has stolen my wallet, I did not notice anything at the time.
Another thing, it is better not to wear any expensive jewerelly there also: a big golden ones or big diamonts will bring unnessasary attention to you.
