UK airport hotels are not cheap. Those near to Heathrow are listed here:

http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow_hotels.htm

If you are arriving at 1, then (assuming you check-in at your hotel/dump your bags first) you won' be leaving for London much before 3pm. The Heathrow Express (fastest but most expensive) takes 15-20 minutes, ordinary stopping trains (cheaper) take 25-30 minutes, Tube (cheaper again) takes 45-60 minutes. There are coaches, but I'd avoid these at that time of day because of potential traffic congestion.

http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow.htm

has info and links.

As quite a lot of sights/sites in London close at 5/5.30pm you'll be limited as to what you can see from the inside. What is the most important 'inside' for you: British Museum? Westminster Abbey? Tate Gallery? Most places have their own webistes, but there is plenty of information here too:

http://www.visitlondon.com/attractions/

Once you have visited this/these, you could then take one of the hop-on, hop-off bus tours to see other sights (if they are still running at that time).

Can't find any info on bus times, so check before you buy a ticket.

Alternatively, just buy a streetmap once you arrive and enjoy walking around central London.

My suggestion is that you book a room in the St Giles Hotel, Feltham. There is a bus that goes from Heathrow to Feltham station, which is next to this large budget hotel. Dump your bags, freshen up, then take the fast train into Waterloo station. From there it is a short walk to the London eye, buy a ticket for later and spend the rest of the day walking east along the South Bank of the Thames. This will take you past a dozen major attractions. Return to the London Eye, do the ride, have some dinner in a nearby restaurant, then return to the hotel in Feltham via Waterloo in late evening tired but happy.

This avoids dealing with the tubes and buses, it is difficult to get lost on the river South bank and the train is fast and cheap. You can get a room in the hotel for about £60 or so.

Hi Sweetie,

With 8-9 hrs to roam around you must visit as many of the famous landmarks as you can. Piccadilly, Leicester Square, Trafalger Square(Charing Cross), Westminster, Oxford Street, Bond Street, Convent Garden + a visit to Harrods (Knightsbridge) - all these spots are on the Tube. Buy a Visitor's One Day Underground ticket & grab an underground map (a free, small leaflet) and off you go from LHR straight into the Capital City. This way it don't matter about the weather - rain or shine.

The the best.
