Israel VHS/DVD Player
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 01:48 PM UTC
I am coming to Israel at the end of 2009 from the United States. I know the voltage in Israel is 220 Volts. I will be bringing my VHS/DVD collection and I want to buy a VHS/DVD player that is 220 Volts and plays American region tapes. My question is does anyone know of a good, quality brand or company I can buy one from. I don't exactly know where to buy a reliable one from and even if so, how could I test it here in Ohio, where everything is 110 Voltage. Does Israel carry them? Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, as of February 9, 2009, analog TV in the USA will cease and TV will go digital. We have to purchase a special converter box for our analog TVs or else get cable or satelite in order to get TV. Is this something that will happen in Israel too? I mean, if I brought a TV to Israel would I need to bring a certain kind to pick up the signal? Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Don't worry about the voltage/frequency. Your TV will not be of any use outside the Americas as the Americas have NTSC system and almost the rest of the world uses PAL (or SECAM).

There are VHS players and TVs which are multi-system. That is, they work for both PAL and NTSC. I can watch American videos on my VHS with no problem. For DVD, you will need a player which is multi-zone. That is, a player which will play DVDs bought anywhere around the world, not only the US. You can use a digital TV here assuming you get cable or satellite connections. Both are now digital and offer a HD subscription.

There are some stores in the states specializing in 220 volts appliances. I bought several times from Bondy Exports in NY. They can advise you as they a lot of experience in these matters:

Yes as Gil said there are dealers who specialize in selling products in America for use in Israel...before my wife and I returned to Israel we purchased many electrical items such as TV, Stereo and others to bring back with us.
If you are moving to Israel as a new immigrant, often you have special discounts when you purchase items such as a TV here in Israel.
