you dont say at which cross-street along Rutland Road. This is southern
Crown Heights or northern Flatbush, and it is Not a posh area, Not a
happening, hip tourist area, to say the least! it's a middle class Jamaican/Caribbean neighborhood. It's not an out-and-out ghetto, no;
but there is definitely street crime. I would not take mass transit
when coming back home late at night. You will definitely see bars on
many of the ground floor windows. Rutland runs east-to-west, beginning
at Flatbush Ave in the west. There you will find the B and Q trains
(Brighton Beach line); moving east, you have the 2 and 5 (IRT), then
the (shudder!) L train (14 St line). Go to mta.info for maps.

Thanks for the info complete address fro the apartment we are renting is:

332 Rutland Road in Prospect Gardens, Brooklyn
Cross street: Nostrand Ave.

You got me quiet worried with your comments on the area.

Pls tell me is not that bad. Obviously the nearer we are from Mahatan more expensive but this one seems clean and very nice furnished. We are flying from Spain and used to the noise and all sort of people.

Any comments would be highly apreciatted as I did not have lots of replies to muy post.
Thanks again!!!

Just be “streetwise,” or “aware of your surroundings” in New York City parlance. Keep your money hidden, walk with a strong step and in the evenings, try traveling with a group. If you’re worried about safety, buy some pepper spray and keep it handy.
When you're taking the subway at night, try ride in the center car, about the 5th car in (where the conductor rides), never in the first or last car – those cars are usually emptier and thieves and bad guys tend to target the single riders.
As for directions, try the Hopstop.com Web site, which gives you subway and bus directions when you punch in your starting and ending point. You can also check out the Metropolitan Transit Web site http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/index.html for subway and bus maps and directions.
I wish you a wonderful stay in New York!
