We are planning to visit Sacred Valley from Cusco. I know that a private taxi can be hired for the day for around $50-$60. Is it possible to also hire a guide to go with our group of 4-5 people? If so, approximately how much does it cost and how do you go about arranging for a guide to join us? Thank you!

You've been really helpful - thanks for all your advice! Since we are not doing an "official" tour, we will buy our Machu Picchu entrance tickets ourselves. Do you know if it's possible to buy those in advance from the US or will we need to wait until we arrive in Cusco to purchase them? If we have to wait until we arrive, do you know if there is any risk of the entrance tickets being unavailable/sold out? (We are booking our trains today.)

You're quite welcome! It's good you've secured your train tickets today and got that over with. As to the MP entrance tickets, you'll have a lot of competition for them if you are going during tourist season (between May-September). No, you can cannot buy these tickets while in the US; however, you can have your hotel/hostel in either Cusco or Aguas Calientes buy it for you in advance & pay them when you get there for your "peace of mind." If you want to wait until you get there, you can buy these tickets yourself in either Cusco or AC. I was there in January, i got a taxi for 40 soles, to the Ollantaytambo station..maybe if you looked for more, you would find a better fee!
