Machu Picchu Guide for Machu Picchu
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 01:21 PM UTC
I have read that you can hire a guide at the entrance to Machu Picchu. Is this correct? We are planning to stay in Aguas Calientes the night before so we can be at Machu Picchu at sunrise the following morning. We'd like to hire someone and would like to know how easy it is to find a knowledgeable guide and approximately how much it will cost. If you have any info or tips, thank you!

You've asked this question already and as I've said before, the guides are available in MP, so no need to do a tour package. I cannot attest to these guides' "knowledge" and "expertise" as I personally have not hired any of them. Check with your hostel/hotel in Aguas Calientes if they have any they can highly recommend. Goodluck!

When I was in MP there was a man that was hanging around the ticket area when you buy your ticket for the bus to get you up the mountain. His job was to sort out the people who were looking for their previously hired guides. When ours didn't show up (it turned out to be a misunderstanding as our guide did eventually show up) he offered to find us a replacement. I think it was $50 USD for a 2 hour tour. The catch was we paid him there and they were to meet us at the entrance gate. As our guide did end up showing up we didn't take him up on this offer but as I am a pessimist it sounded a little fishy. He did call out tour guide so I think he was legit. I wouldn't worry you will be able to hire one there.
