Paris train in Paris
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 12:16 PM UTC
My children are flying to Paris and plan on meeting us in Orange. They arrive in Paris early in the morning and would like to spend the day in Paris before taking the train to Orange in the evening. Is that doable? Is the train station convenient enough for them to check their bags there while touring? Finally, what are the prices and schedules like and how would they purchase their tickets online before leaving for their trip? Thanks to all for your help.

Assuming they arrive at CDG, your children could take the Air France Bus (line 4) to Gare de Lyon (15€ each) from where they will later leave for Orange via Lyon. At one time there was a luggage consignment at the station, I assume there still is.

The journey to Orange will require 4-5 hours travel time depending upon selected depart. Afternoon trains are available giving them several hours in Paris. Tickets may be purchased on line. The sooner they are purchased the cheaper they will be.

it is doable if your children arrive early enough in the morning at CDG.They will take a bus to Gare de Lyon. Upon arrival at the Gare de Lyon station it is now again possible to check in luggage at the "consigne à bagage" for a fee. After years of closure the SNCF has now put them back in service with security X-ray scanning devices.
Now I think the easiest way to get from Gare de Lyon to Orange is to book seats on TGV 6195 leaving Paris: 17h46 arriving ORANGE: 3.15 hours later. It is a direct train: no need to connect in Part Dieu-LYON.
The fares: they vary according to the schedule. On this particular TGV I have not checked them yet but this can be done easily at "SNCF". If your children
are under 25 they may benefit a special fare

The tickets can be bought on line and printed on their computer at home. At any rate they MUST have reservations taken in advance to gain access to the train.
In summer, particularly on trains heading south it is also necessary and much more convenient to buy tickets on line. They won't have to go through long waiting lines at the last moment
