Gas is currently about $4 a gallon, the typical rental car will average 20-25 miles per gallon on the open road, a bit less in the city. The millage will vary considerably depending on the car you rent, but this should be a good average unless you rent an SUV. Use something like google maps to calacultate your route distances and you can get a good ballpart figure.

Many rental car companies in California are renting hybrid cars now, even though they are more expensive. You might consider that as well.
I am just generalizing, but the majority of cars in the US have less than 30 mpg.

Of course, you should shop for deals on the actual car rental. That will probably cost more that the petrol. Make sure you have unlimited miles as many companies are charging.45/mile. Because you're dropping the car at a different airport your weekly rate could be $400. (at Thrifty) to $600 (at National or Avis) for a standard or full size car. Your trip could easily run 1500 - 200 miles.
There used to be a time when you could rent cars in California for $100. -$200 a week unlimited and no DROP charge. Mt recent trip leads me to believe those days are over. Enjoy California, it's a beautiful state.
