Hi! I'll be in Nepal soon. I'd like to do some volunteer work with children in Kathmandu. Are there any schools and children home that I go and work as a volunteer? do I need a permit? thanks!

Hi again :-)
1) Good Question – a lot of people can go very wrong on this one before they have even started, When I was in Nepal earlier this year I met up with an Australian lass who had paid out a large sum of money to volunteer and was meant to be met at Tribuvan airport on arrival, Guest what – None turned up and then she was unable to contact the organisation !! I put her in touch with Declan at http://www.just-one.org/ He runs this charity that strives to actively promote and facilitate educational opportunities for disadvantaged and marginalized children in Nepal by working at a grass-roots level with the children, their families and their communities to implement a range of carefully developed, culturally sensitive, sustainable initiatives. This might be a good starting point for you 2) 99%+ volunteers enter Nepal on a tourist visa and I have never heard of a single one that has Ever fallen foul of the Nepalese immigration department. In fact a lot of the people who run the volunteering organisations are themselves on Tourist Visas, Again, I have never heard of a single one that has Ever fallen foul of the Nepalese immigration department. Your maximum stay would be 5 months in one calendar year.

Hi,
Rob('Into Thin Air') is always a wonderful resource and is very helpful with his suggestions. My friend Emma Taylor has also been running an orphanage for the last few years in Kathmandu. Do write to me at nitinron@yahoo.com if you wish to get in touch with her. Good luck with your trip. I have been to Nepal 3 times in the last 2 years-you will have the trip and experience of a lifetime! Cheers, Nitin Nitin P Ron, MD Pediatrician and Neonatologist NYC, USA
